Week 7

Week 7

Product Development 1 - CADD

For week 7’s lesson, we are introduced to a 3D computed-aided design (CAD) software, Autodesk Fusion 360 which will allow us to design/sketch objects that can be 3D printed later on.

Pre-lesson:

Before the lesson, we were supposed to read/refer to the provided lesson materials in order to design a keyring. Although it was challenging to navigate the interface at first, it required time to slowly get used to it.  For example, finding the sketch tool to offset the curve was confusing at first but after experimenting with the shortcuts, the keyring was completed.

First-activity:

During the class lesson, we designed a handle using the constraints such as:

  • Horizontal/Vertical function which snaps a line/2 points to the axis.
  • Coincidental which will snap a line to a circle by selecting the edge
  • Tangent which will create a tangent line
  • Concentric which allows 2 circles to be connected with the same centre

Second-activity:

As a group, we were tasked to design an A5 photo frame with dimensions of 192mm x 142mm.
The photo frame is made from 4 different parts:

Final design:

The photo frame was designed using the skills learnt from the previous 2 activities such as creating shapes, filleting, offsetting and extruding. We also learnt to use the appearance and offset plane function to create the final design. After completing the 4 parts, they were stacked above one another into 1 piece by using the offset plane to create the photo frame. We then changed the material appearance of the photo frame by using ABS plastic for the front, back and the photo holder while the transparent part used clear acrylic.
